Angela Durey

Dr Angela Durey joined the School of Dentistry, University of Western Australia in 2014 as a Research Associate Professor. She works in an interdisciplinary and intercultural team to explore oral health inequalities in disadvantaged populations. Her academic background in anthropology and sociology has centred on qualitative research and education in rural, remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Her research includes exploring how concepts of whiteness and privilege are normalised in Australia and not reflected on for how they can discriminate against culturally diverse populations in ways that can compromise rather than promote health. Engaging with the wider community is integral to her research and involves establishing and building relationships with key stakeholders across contexts to translate research findings into policy and practice that improves health outcomes.
